Our history

i-Cap is a Black owned (56%) business solutions provider and our involvement in the field of transformation goes back to the start of the University of Cape Town's Graduate School of Business Breakwater Monitor project in 1991. This was the first and to date, the only employment equity benchmarking service in South Africa.

As a result of the Breakwater Monitor project, the principal shareholders of i-Cap were contracted by USAID to assist the Department of Labour with the implementation of the Employment Equity Act in South Africa. Our involvement spanned over six years from 1996 to 2002 and included the following activities:

  • Finalising the Employment Equity Act and developing an enforcement and implementation model for the Act.
  • Conducting the baseline survey of Employment Equity profiles in South Africa.
  • Drafting the regulations to the Act and the Code of Good Practice on the development of Employment Equity Plans.
  • Developing the business processes and systems specifications for the implementation of Employment Equity in the Department of Labour.
  • Setting up and managing the Employment Equity Registry until 2002.
  • Developing the enforcement procedures and training labour inspectors in their application.
Since 2002, i-Cap focussed more on the needs of employers by offering various employment equity training programmes and assisting organisations with all aspects of implementation.

During the same period i-Cap developed and administered the Black Management Forum's "Most Progressive Company" awards. The criteria used to evaluate companies for these awards eventually became the current pillars of Broad-based Black Economic Empowerment.

i-Cap has been involved in transformation across a broad spectrum of organisations, including: Hewlett-Packard, Kraft Foods South Africa, IBM, Department of Trade & Industry, Cipro, Nampak; Tiger-Brands; Gold Reef City Casino, Old Mutual, Sanlam, Metropolitan and many others.
